Our Take

Karravaan sits on the ground floor of a new apartment building in Union Market and plays a convincing trick: the room feels a century old, built like a 1920s Beirut café crossed with a waiting room for a departing train, tiled floors and bentwood chairs under an oversized clock and a wall of windows. The design isn't set dressing. It matches a menu that treats the Silk Road as one continuous pantry, pulling Lebanon, Turkey, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Tibet onto the same table without any of it reading as gimmick.

The food backs up the concept. Smoky eggplant, sharp ginger, pomegranate seeds, ground pistachio, heavy hands of za'atar — the flavors are bold and specific rather than blended into a vague regional gesture. Order to share: the falafel with slivered ginger, khachapuri steaming with goat feta, lamb sliders cut with sumac and jalapeño, za'atar fries on the side. Nothing on that list is safe, and none of it misses.

The recognition has followed. Karravaan has landed on national lists and earned a Michelin Guide selection. That's confirmation, not the reason to go. The reason is a kitchen with a real point of view and the nerve to serve it whole.

The Spot
Karravaan traces its menu along the old Silk Road, drawing together dishes and culinary traditions from the regions that route once connected. It sits on Morse Street in NoMa, Northeast Washington.

The kitchen's range across cuisines shows in what keeps coming up: butter chicken, duck, and khachapuri all show up regularly among what regulars order, alongside a menu that spans multiple culinary traditions rather than sticking to one.

Karravaan made Eater's list of 38 essential D.C. restaurants and was named a Michelin Selected restaurant in the 2025 guide.
