Sluys Poulsbo Bakery has been baking on Liberty Bay since Marion and Loretta Sluys bought the former Bauer's Bake Shop in 1966 and put their own name on the door. Their son Daniel now runs it with his wife, Stephanie — he's been in the bakery since he was eight years old, once standing on a five-gallon can to reach the counter.

Everything comes from scratch in small batches, including grain, rye, and sourdough breads alongside donuts, Danish pastries, cakes, and cookies. The house specialty is Poulsbo Bread, an original recipe that gave the bakery its name recognition, alongside other in-house creations like Brod, Sweet Black, Norwegian Black, Farmers, and Jalapeno Cheese breads. Old World recipes — Julekake, Stollen, Cardamom bread, Kransekake, and Fattigman — round out the Scandinavian roots of the place. Regulars also flag the Viking Cup as a must-try, and special orders include the bakery's famed 3-pound King Olaf donut.

The bakery has been voted Best Bakery in Kitsap County for ten straight years and draws lines that regularly stretch outside its Poulsbo storefront.
