Shalhoob's Funk Zone Patio grew out of Shalhoob Meat Company, the family butcher shop Jerry Shalhoob started in 1973 back when the Funk Zone was still an industrial stretch rather than the art-lined Urban Wine Trail it's become. As the neighborhood changed, the family converted its old cutting room into a working kitchen and turned the concrete lot behind the shop into an open-air patio with custom-built tables and rustic planters.
The kitchen draws on the meat counter next door: proteins are hormone- and antibiotic-free, grain-fed with no by-products, and seafood comes directly from Santa Barbara fishermen. The menu includes Cota Street Wings, Baja fish tacos, baby back ribs, a falafel sandwich, avocado salad, and street corn served off the cob, alongside barbecue sandwiches regulars keep coming back for.
The patio is dog-friendly, with its own menu for four-legged guests, and has built a reputation for happy hour value and attentive service. Shalhoob's remains family owned into its third generation, run alongside the original butcher shop and jerky operation. Santa Barbara Independent named it among the city's best in 2025.
