Gumbo Social began as a pop-up before landing in Bayview as a brick-and-mortar soul food counter. At the center of it is Chef Dontaye Ball, who learned to make gumbo from his grandmother starting at age 8 and has built the restaurant's entire identity around her recipe.
The menu stays simple: a deep, dark roux simmered with okra, the Cajun holy trinity of onions, bell peppers, and celery, and a spice blend built on paprika, cayenne, and black pepper. Two versions are typically offered — chicken and sausage, and smoked turkey — alongside po'boys. The restaurant also runs a catering and takeout program.
It has become a known gathering point in the neighborhood, with regulars describing it as a welcoming, community-rooted stop for gumbo that doesn't usually turn up on San Francisco menus.
