Our Take

Abacá sits inside a Fisherman's Wharf hotel, in the kind of tourist-zone location that usually signals a kitchen coasting on foot traffic. It isn't. This is the permanent version of the Pinoy Heritage pop-up, and it plays as the first real attempt at Filipino fine dining the city has had — traditional flavors taken apart and rebuilt with ingredient pairings that don't show up elsewhere on the local map.

The room backs that ambition up. Service is sharp, the kitchen is consistent night to night, and the cooking reads as authentic rather than diluted for a hotel-lobby crowd. The portions run small and the checks run high, and that's a fair complaint — but it's the complaint of a place charging for precision, not for scarcity.

Walk past the cable car magnets and the shot glasses out front. What's happening past that lobby has already drawn a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist nod and a spot in San Francisco's Michelin selections. Both are earned. Abacá took a cuisine the city's fine dining scene had ignored and made the case for it in full, inside the one neighborhood nobody expected to find it.

The Spot
Abacá occupies the Kimpton Alton Hotel in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, run by co-owners Chef Francis Ang and Director of Operations Dian Ang. It grew out of the Pinoy Heritage pop-up before becoming a permanent restaurant, and is counted among the city's first Filipino fine dining spots.

The kitchen blends Filipino flavors with seasonal Northern California ingredients across three menus — weekday breakfast, weekend brunch, and nightly dinner — plus a Panaderia counter inside the restaurant for fresh-baked pastries and espresso drinks. The chef's signature dish is sisig fried rice. The breakfast and brunch menus run through lumpia with pineapple chili sauce, bibingka rice cake with caramelized brie and salted egg, a bibingka bubble waffle, chicken longganisa with mango and calamansi glaze, and ensaymada croissant brioche.

Michelin selected Abacá for its guide in 2026. The restaurant was also a semifinalist for the James Beard Best New Restaurant award in 2022, and its chef was a James Beard Outstanding Pastry Chef finalist in 2023.
