Animae is an Asian-inspired wagyu steakhouse in downtown San Diego, built around a coal-fired oven and Japanese robata grill that handle seasonal ingredients with smoke and fire. The name nods to the visual energy of anime and pays tribute to actress Anna May Wong, framing a menu meant to sit at the intersection of steakhouse indulgence and Asian American identity.
Executive Chef Tara Monsod took over the kitchen in 2021, bringing experience from Juniper & Ivy, Herringbone, Burlap, and Mozza, along with a Filipino American perspective that shapes the cooking.
The menu runs through shrimp toast, wontons, and caviar service before moving into wagyu and steak preparations cooked over coal and robata fire.
Monsod has been named a James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef: California in 2024 and 2025, with semifinalist recognitions in 2025 and 2026. Animae was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2024, holds a spot on the Eater 38, and was named to San Diego Magazine's best restaurants list for 2025.
