Our Take

The name tells you the premise: ōkta runs as farm and kitchen, a fine dining room built around what's grown rather than what's trendy. That's not marketing copy here — it's the restaurant's own description of itself, and the recognition backs it up.

What stands out is the trajectory, not just the debut. A semifinalist nod for Best New Restaurant is easy to write off as opening buzz. Following it a year later with a semifinalist nod for Best Chef in the Pacific Northwest is different — that's the Beard Foundation saying the kitchen kept getting better after the opening excitement wore off, which is the harder thing to pull off.

Portland has no shortage of farm-driven fine dining rooms chasing the same idea. ōkta is one of the few getting national attention two years running for actually executing it.

That's enough to call this Damn Good, and worth building a trip around.

The Spot
ōkta farm and kitchen sits inside the Tributary Hotel in McMinnville, in the heart of Willamette Valley wine country. Chef Christy Smith sources ingredients grown, foraged, and harvested throughout the valley, with produce handpicked daily from the restaurant's namesake farm on Ribbon Ridge.

Dinner is a four-course tasting menu organized into Field, Sea, Pasture, and Pantry. Dishes have included charred cabbage with ricotta and roasted pepper, pork belly with summer squash and fresno chile, salmon crudo with cherry tomato and furikake, black cod with summer squash and dashi, rabbit confit pasta with dill and carrot, grass-fed beef with spring onion and turnip, and desserts like chocolate cake with Rainier cherries and peach cobbler with smoked tea ice cream. The menu shifts with the season and harvest.

Christy Smith was named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef Northwest Pacific in 2024, and ōkta was a Best New Restaurant semifinalist in 2023.
