The Bayou Kitchen has operated out of a house on Deering Avenue in Back Cove for more than 25 years. Karl Silander, a chef and caterer with over two decades of experience in Maine and New Jersey, bought the restaurant in 2006 and runs it as a family operation.
The kitchen sits open to the dining room, so the cooks are visible from the tables. The menu runs through Southern and Cajun comfort food — gumbo with crawfish, cornbread, grits, and a rotating lineup of hot sauces — alongside breakfast staples like the El Rancho Verde omelette, French toast, and home fries, with vegetarian versions built into the classic dishes.
It has settled into its role as a neighborhood breakfast and brunch spot in Back Cove, with regulars returning for the same dishes and lines that build on weekends.
