Our Take

Kalaya is Nok Suntaranon's southern Thai kitchen, named for her mother and cooked from memories of a market stall in Trang — and it has become one of America's defining Thai restaurants without softening a single curry. The heat is the truth-telling kind, the dumplings are jewelry, and the sharing-table format is non-negotiable.

The Beard Foundation named Nok Best Chef and then named Kalaya the country's Outstanding Restaurant, with the 50 Best list agreeing along the way. National acclaim usually sands a place down. Kalaya still cooks like it's answering to one woman's memory.

The Spot
Kalaya takes its name from chef-owner Nok Suntaranon's mother, whose market stall in Trang, in southern Thailand, shaped the cooking Suntaranon built here after opening the restaurant in North Philadelphia in 2019.

The menu moves through southern Thai dishes built for the table: aromatic curries, delicate dumplings, wok-fried specialties, and herb-driven salads, all meant to be shared and calibrated for color and spice in equal measure.

Recognition has piled up quickly. The James Beard Foundation named Kalaya Outstanding Restaurant in 2026 after advancing through the semifinalist and finalist rounds, following Suntaranon's own James Beard win for Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic in 2023 and a Best Chef finalist nod in 2022. Kalaya has also landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list in both 2025 and 2026, was selected by the Michelin Guide in 2025, and appeared on The New York Times' Restaurant List in 2023 — alongside a spot on Eater's list of essential Philadelphia restaurants and Robb Report's Best New Restaurants for 2026.
