John's Water Ice has been serving Bella Vista since 1945, a fixture of South Philadelphia's Italian Market area long before water ice became a citywide obsession. The format is simple and unchanged: a walk-up counter, a rotating lineup of Italian ice flavors, and a lemon that regulars treat as the benchmark.

The crowd here spans generations — families who've been coming for decades bring their kids, who bring their own kids. Lines can stretch out the door on warm days, and the wait is part of the ritual as much as the ice itself.

It remains one of the city's reference points for what water ice is supposed to taste like, cited alongside Philadelphia's small handful of old-guard stands still doing it the original way.
