Our Take

Honeysuckle runs Black comfort food two ways, and both arguments work. At the bar, it's à la carte and loose — catfish done with real finesse, a vinyl collection behind the bottles, plantain-washed cocktails that taste like someone thought past the garnish. In the dining room, the same sensibility tightens into a four-course tasting that doesn't lose the soul the bar side trades on. The curried beef agnolotti is the dish worth building a night around, and it isn't even the loudest thing on the menu.

What makes this work is the range. A restaurant this busy — dates, tourists working through Nigerian lagers, families checking whether the catfish holds up to memory — could easily flatten into one crowd-pleasing mode. Honeysuckle doesn't. The communal table and the quieter tasting menu are the same kitchen at two different volumes, and neither feels like a concession to the other.

The recognition arrived fast: a Michelin selection, back-to-back James Beard mid-Atlantic chef nods. None of it explains the room better than the food does. This is Black comfort cooking turned into a reason people plan their week around a table, earned dish by dish.

The Spot
Honeysuckle sits on North Broad Street in Spring Garden, founded by chefs Omar Tate and Cybille St.Aude-Tate around the idea of reclaiming Black food traditions. The restaurant describes its own approach as "artistry meets ancestry," framing each dish as a link between diaspora history and the present.

The restaurant runs a high-end tasting experience alongside a café and catering service, with ingredients sourced as seasonal, organic, and sustainably grown from local purveyors.

Regulars have built a loyal following around the food and cocktails, though feedback also points to inconsistency in service and pacing, along with limited flexibility within the tasting menu structure.

Recognition has followed quickly: Honeysuckle appears on Eater's Essential 38 for Philadelphia, was named to Philadelphia Magazine's Best of 2025 list, and was rated 8/10 by The Infatuation. Michelin gave it a Selected designation in its 2025 guide, and Omar Tate is both a semifinalist and finalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic award in 2026.
