The Spot
Mama Safia's Kitchen is a family-run Somali and East African restaurant on Lake Street near Karmel Mall, in the heart of Minneapolis's Somali community. Chef Safia Munye and her kitchen team prepare everything fresh daily, and all food is halal. The space is decorated with Somali artifacts and set up to welcome families, women, and men alike, with a prayer room and a private dining area on site.

The restaurant's original location was lost in the 2020 fire during the George Floyd protests, and the community helped rebuild it. Mama Safia has continued cooking for her neighbors ever since, and her presence in the room remains part of the draw.

Mpls St Paul Magazine named it to its Best Restaurants list for 2026, and Eater has included it among its essential Minneapolis restaurants.
