Our Take

ChòpnBlọk serves West African food fast-casual, and the format is the provocation: jollof and suya flavors, curated from home cooks and family recipes, offered at the counter like the everyday food it deserves to be. Ope Amosu built it as a crossroads — West Africa meets Houston — and the city met it head-on.

Then the establishment showed up: a Bib Gourmand, the Times' list, and Beard Best Chef recognition for a counter-service restaurant. That last fact is the whole argument. The genre didn't limit the cooking, and the judges noticed.

The Spot
ChòpnBlọk unveils a West African culinary experience in fast-casual form: fresh proteins, vegetables, grains, and beverages built around a West African flavor profile, packaged for quick, everyday dining. Recipes are curated from home cooks, chefs, and family members, then reworked by the restaurant's culinary team into dishes suited for a local, contemporary audience.

Ingredients are selectively sourced, with an emphasis on natural, never-frozen meats and vegetables bought as locally as possible. Beverages are made in-house, drawing on West African street flavors rather than a standard soda-and-tea lineup.

Recognition has followed quickly. ChòpnBlọk holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a spot on the Eater 38, a place on the New York Times Restaurant List, and multiple James Beard Foundation semifinalist and finalist nods for Best Chef Texas, alongside an earlier Emerging Chef semifinalist nomination.
