Our Take

Mahaniyom works from restraint, not range. The menu refuses to chase every regional dish Thailand has to offer, and that focus shows in execution: the kang puu arrives as a red curry over delicate vermicelli, loaded with enough crab that sharing feels generous rather than grudging. The jor puu bites — crab, shrimp, pork — and a beef massaman cooked until it falls apart are built for a table willing to order everything and pass it around. Even the green papaya pad thai, a dish every Thai spot hangs its sign on, lands with the right amount of sweetness instead of the usual compromise.

The drinks hold their own against the food, which tracks: one of the owners ran the bar at Shojo in Chinatown before this, and the cocktail list changes often enough to reward repeat visits. Service moves with the kind of confidence that makes you trust the kitchen's choices, and the room earns its reputation as consistent rather than lucky.

Portions run small and parking is a hassle, neither of which changes the verdict. Mahaniyom picked up a Bib Gourmand in Michelin's 2025 guide, recognition that confirms what the plates already argue: a Thai menu with nothing wasted on it.

The Spot
Mahaniyom brings a Thai tapas bar format to Washington Street in Brookline: small plates meant for sharing, paired with a handcrafted cocktail program, in a room built around the kind of grazing-and-drinking spots common in Thailand. Everything on the menu is made from scratch.

The menu stays tight rather than trying to cover the whole of Thai cuisine. Standouts include kang puu, a red curry loaded with crab served over vermicelli noodles, and jor puu, a bite-sized mix of crab, shrimp, and pork. The beef massaman turns up slow-cooked beef, and a green papaya pad thai offers a lighter, sweeter take on the classic.

One of the restaurant's owners previously ran the bar program at Shojo in Chinatown, and that background shows in a cocktail list that changes frequently alongside the food. Michelin awarded Mahaniyom a Bib Gourmand in 2025.
