Lehrhaus is a not-for-profit Jewish tavern and house of learning in Somerville, founded by Rabbi Charlie Schwartz and Joshua Foer and modeled on the Frankfurt Lehrhaus of 1920s Germany. The space functions as both a restaurant and a library, with book signings, live music, and cooking classes built into its regular programming alongside dinner service.
The food menu was developed by chef Michael Levitan with chefs Noah Clickstein and Alex Artianian, drawing on flavors from across the Jewish Diaspora — dishes pull in Mexican and Ethiopian influences alongside more familiar references. A thinly sliced herring tartine with labneh and pickled peppers and a lentil-stuffed delicata squash are among the standouts. The kitchen is certified by KVH as dairy (chalav stam) kosher. Bartender Naomi Levy developed the drink program, including cocktails built on arak as well as spirit-free options.
The restaurant operates as a walk-in tavern, with a backyard and a room designed to double as a gathering space for Jewish learning as much as for dinner and drinks.
